Horizontal gene transfer of entire gnd-cps region is the most likely explanation for the current distribution of cps-gnd regions with a unique origin in distinct genomic backgrounds.
No close phylogenetic relatedness was apparent between the two K1 groups, between the two K2 groups, and between clones Rhinoscleromatis and Ozaenae with other K. pneumoniae strains of serotypes K3, K4 or K5 (Figure 1), indicating an independent origin in distinct genomic backgrounds, rather than a common ancestral origin.
