As instructors and education researchers continue to evaluate the effectiveness of particular active-learning strategies, our data suggest it is important to disaggregate the data based on social identities and identify factors that may underlie these differences in classroom experience.
For some, this may be a small sacrifice to pay, but for others, these outside-the-classroom opportunities and experiences are often just as valuable, if not more valuable, than the in-classroom experience itself.
Indeed, graduate students participating in the National Science Foundation's GK 12 program (spending 15 h/wk developing teaching skills through training and in-classroom experience) reported that the experience improved their time-management skills and motivated them to complete their graduate degree.

Colleges care deeply about the interests students pursue outside the classroom, since they teach lessons about life and self in ways classroom experiences can't.
