Fruit: 3-valved, included in calyx.

Remarkably, along with fertility control, the impairment in calyx inflation in knockdown Withania plants and extraordinary growth of sepals in overexpression lines is observed.
Flower: calyx 1--3 mm, glabrous, membrane 1/2 calyx; corolla funnel-shaped, white or pale blue, generally included in calyx, glabrous, tube << lobes; stamens exserted, glabrous.
Best known for their implication in calyx inflation, MPF2-like genes pertinent to the STMADS11 clade of the MADS-box family exert their functions in leaf development, flowering time, inflorescence architecture and floral reversion to just name but a few.
Flower: calyx 2--4 mm, tube < 1 mm; corolla 4--7 mm, tube, throat yellow, included in calyx, lobes white, obovate, short-pointed; stamens attached near tube base, +- equal, exserted, style +- exserted.
Fruit: ascending, +- included in calyx, 2--4 mm, +- 2 mm wide, +- spheric, 2-lobed in ×-section, +- minutely strigose (glabrous), coarsely wrinkled, drying stiff-papery; chambers 2. Stem: +- erect, 25--45 cm; herbage +- green, sparsely +- strigose.
To our knowledge, this is the first report of phenolic contents in calyx for the species here analyzed of Physalis and reveals that these structures can accumulate relevant phenolic levels.
Northern blot displayed that Lc expressed comparatively weak in calyxes, strong in petals and filaments (Fig. 2), which agreed with the differential TAC increases in calyx, petals and filaments in Lc-transgenic lines (Fig. 1).
