They found that newborn puppies were least attractive, but increased in attractiveness as they got older and fluffier and less mushy-looking, hitting the max cutes before 10 weeks of age.
"They are saying that patients didn't have a change in attractiveness".
Sergeant cites a study in which people were asked to rate themselves in attractiveness and then to rate their partners.
"If you go for someone roughly equally to you in attractiveness, it avoids two things," Sergeant says.
This will result in accomodation becoming more difficult and a decline in attractiveness for the youth that has made the city a sort-after destination.
But a new study, the first to try to quantify attractiveness after a face-lift, brow-lift or eyelid surgery, found only a tiny, insignificant increase in attractiveness.
"It's a very powerful reduction in attractiveness," said Susanne Akesson, an evolutionary ecologist at Lund University in Sweden and one of the researchers involved with the work.
That honour went to the combination of broad shoulders and a narrow waist, which accounted for around three-quarters of the variation in attractiveness all by itself.
He guessed that future research "will show a difference in attractiveness, if we have a larger sample size, and just analyze attractiveness alone".
There were about a hundred women in the room, a few of whom had come with dates; most of the men were white and on the wrong side of a severe imbalance in attractiveness.
The raters estimated patients' ages to be about 2.1 years younger, on average, than their chronological age before surgery, and 5.2 years younger after surgery, an overall difference of 3.1 years, with minimal changes in attractiveness.
