The phrase "impute them to" is correct and can be used in written English.
It means to attribute or assign something to someone or something. Example: The company's financial troubles cannot be imputed to one person, as it was a collective failure of the entire management team.
But the human emotions come with so much linguistic and behavioural baggage that imputing them to a cat, or even a chimp, runs the risk of anthropomorphisation.
