Nino Setiawan, an Indonesian citizen working in the imports-exports sector in Nigeria, credits a man named Mohan Vaswani, the chairman of the Singapore-based Tolaraisingup, wIndomiesing Indomie's popularity in Nigeria.
"Over the past three decades they have penetrated key business sectors, including import-export, transport, real estate and construction in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Arab Gulf and beyond," Peters wrote in the paper, Haqqani Network Financing.
The measure hits Russia's defense and energy sectors, punishing companies like state defense import-export company Rosoboronexport.
"Business," people would say, or "import-export".
Because they leave no paper trail, hawala transfers are particularly useful in the layering phase: The system's legitimate ties with trade-intensive businesses like those of jewelry, import and export sectors, and travel and foreign exchange services, all provide a good cover for the critical interface between legal and illegal channels.
Only relative prices matter and thus the anti-export bias in trade policy can arise by protecting the import competing industry or by directly taxing the export sector.
Greece has never had a strong export sector, and although exports have risen to record levels, the country still imports about twice as much as it exports.
We emphasize two manifestations of such bias: the burden imposed by economic policies on the agricultural export sector and the benefits granted to manufacturing sectors that typically competed against imports from the rest of the world the model of import substitution.2 Fig. 1 Trade openness exports + imports as a share of GDP.
And the policies supporting the export sector are detrimental to many Chinese, who earn little and pay more than they might for imports.
One is a more dynamic export sector.
