As explained in the literature review, there is evidence of both positive and negative health implications of migration in different settings, and similarly positive and negative implications for household socioeconomic status reported in different studies.
In fact, competences related to public health are listed as: global burden of disease, health implications of travel, migration and displacement, social and economic determinants of health, population, resources and environment, globalisation of health and healthcare, healthcare in low-resource settings, human rights in global health, cultural diversity and health (46, 47).
At the same time, the debate on the economic development implications of migration is a long-standing and often emotional one.
The INDEPTH Migration and Urbanisation Working Group used HDSS data from seven HDSS sites in six countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia to study the health and socio-economic implications of migration (21).
The implications of the high degree of migration and plate deformation for long-term survival are not known.
In spite of the importance of this implication for migration and integration policy, it has received little attention in the literature.
