In this contribution we focus on the development and implementation of a decision making process based on criteria accounting for the above mentioned issues.
While much of this research has centered on the implementation of guidelines, there has been increasing focus on the implementation of shared decision making strategies.

Our findings support reports in the literature that physicians perceive implementation of shared decision making strategies to be time consuming[ 2, 3, 18- 28] and potentially lacking applicability to patients due to the complexity of information or patients' characteristics[ 2, 3, 18, 19, 22, 26- 29].
In other chronic conditions, efforts to increase the implementation of shared decision making and/or motivational interviewing in clinical practice have been shown to improve patients' self-confidence in approaching changes in treatment management, and to improve patients' engagement in care, risk factor management, and achievement of informed, values-based treatment choices [ 36- 38].
These specifics within the health care system may have created a culture of doctor patient interaction that can complicate the implementation of shared decision making.
In their updated systematic review, Légaré et al. found time constraints, patient characteristics, and the clinical situation to be the most often reported barriers for the implementation of shared decision making [ 37, 38].
We consider that our study will contribute to the development of higher-quality decision support tools in the future, as well as to the implementation of shared decision making in the context of the sensitive decisions about prenatal screening for DS.
