Finally, there is a lack of studies showing the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of implementing distress screening in routine practice (Kruijver et al, 2006; Garssen and de Kok, 2008; Mitchell et al, 2008).
The French aviation regulatory authority (DGAC) said the aircraft did not issue a distress call, as initially reported, but that its sudden drop in altitude had led air traffic controllers to implement the "distress phase".
"The combination of the loss of radio contact and the aircraft's descent which led the controller to implement the distress phase," a spokesman said.

Researchers are encouraged to emphasise the benefits of research participation, while also continuing to work to minimise the potential for distress and implement appropriate duty of care protocols.
