On the left, New York Times columnist David Brooks dismissed the film's characterisation of the alien Na'vi people as a "racist fantasy"; on the right, John Podhoretz of The Weekly Standard raged against the film's environmental, anti-imperialist message as a "deep expression of anti-Americanism".
Adam Cohen of The New York Times was more positive about the film, calling its anti-imperialist message "a 22nd-century version of the American colonists vs. the British, India vs. the Raj, or Latin America vs. United Fruit".
In an essay called "Fiction and Reality in Latin America," he discerned even in the conquest of the Incas a message more anti-dictatorial than anti-imperialist: "The vertical and totalitarian structure of the Tahuantinsuyu was, without doubt, more of a threat to its survival than all the conquistadors' firearms and iron weapons".
From the big poster of Hugo Chávez on the wall to the stacks of strident anti-imperialist pamphlets and propaganda newspapers in the waiting room, the message is loud and clear: if you're not a dyed-in-the-wool Chavista, this is enemy territory.
