Examples are the use of nitrates (medication adjustment), presence of anxiety or depression (psychotherapy), visual impairment (correction of vision), and impaired function of lower extremities (physiotherapy).
Nevertheless, since age is strongly associated with cognitive impairment, correction for age may have reduced such bias if present.
The exclusion criteria were the following: regular physical training in the last 3 months; severe clinical musculoskeletal impairments; implanted prosthesis of previous fractures in the axial skeleton or lower limbs; visual impairment without correction; and a recent complaint of dizziness or falls.

All patients were of Zulu ethnicity and thus for the MDRD calculation of the prevalence of renal impairment, the ethnicity correction factor of 1.21 was excluded on the assumption that the population would not differ from the population of black South Africans for whom this method was recently validated in a hospitalised population [ 10].

The fact that only 16.36% (98/599) of the correctable visual impairment for a 6/12 cutoff, and 18.94% (50/264) for a 6/18 cutoff had spectacles for distance correction indicated that refractive correction is still significantly underutilized, although a large number of visual impairment caused by refractive errors can easily be corrected by wearing the appropriate spectacles.
