Social and scientific value - Research projects must be designed to yield important information and new knowledge that has a positive impact for science and society.
Governments and institutions must develop more innovative ways of measuring real-world impact for environmental science.
This, in turn, can have a direct impact on support for science: A report by the Department of Energy, addressing the crisis of its dwindling purchasing power, identifies a lack of appreciation of its research by the public as a source of this problem.
The SCL project was carried out by the MoD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), which is focused on maximising "the impact of science and technology for the defence and security of the UK".
