To rely only on runways currently in operation would be likely to produce a distinctly sub-optimal solution for passengers, connectivity and the economy, and would also almost certainly not be the best solution in terms of minimising the overall carbon impact of flights and travel to and from airports.
An electron impact time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) study revealed 13CH4 to be a dominant product in the early stages of the photocatalysis under 13CO2 atmosphere, whereas only ∼25% of the total observed methane accounted for 13CH4 resulting from 13CO2 in the prolonged photocatalytic reaction over 6 h.
Samples were analysed on an Agilent 6890N gas chromatograph and 7683 autosampler (Agilent Technologies, UK) coupled to a LECO Pegasus III electron impact time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LECO Corporation, USA).
Chemical derivatization [ 73, 74] and gas chromatography - electron impact ionization/time of flight - mass spectrometry (GC-EI/TOF-MS) metabolite profiling analysis [ 75, 76] was performed essentially as described previously.
Other metabolites were quantified applying GC MS (Agilent 6890 Gas Chromatograph coupled to a Leco Pegasus III electron impact-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Leco, http://www.leco.com/)) and the external calibration method for accurate quantification.
