This democratization of connoisseurship is somewhat surprising since as recently as the social upheavals of the 1960s and '70s connoisseurship was a "dirty word" — considered "elitist, artificial, subjective and mostly imaginary," said Laurence B. Kanter, chief curator of the Yale University Art Gallery.
The use of these terms in the exact sciences in any other sense than that of not true is perhaps surprising". So far, nothing too unexpected for the reader from a later era -- then Argand begins proposing new, less pejorative terminology: instead of "real", say "prime order", and instead of "imaginary", say "medial order".
"Even if I say: 'This is fiction, it's all imaginary,'" says Pamuk, "I don't want you to believe it".

Ms. Brooks, who has a new book due out later this year about black performers in the 19th century, "Bodies in Dissent: Performing Race, Gender, and Nation in the Trans-Atlantic Imaginary" (Duke University Press), says her peers are open to teaching popular music.
"Oh, no!" David Gregory's imaginary voter says, "I really don't like Obama's positions on anything, BUT I MUST HONOR HISTORY".
