In 1938 Bowen invented the image slicer, a device that improves the efficiency of the slit spectrograph, which is used to break up light into its component colours for study.
A research and development activity on image slicer systems for integral field spectroscopy has grown in the last years.
At its heart is an all-glass image slicer with high throughput based on a novel de-magnifying design allowing a compact instrument.

We report on the design and status of the Florida Image Slicer for Infrared Cosmology and Astrophysics (FISICA) – a fully-cryogenic all-reflective image-slicing integral field unit for the FLAMINGOS near-infrared spectrograph.
This shows that the best method in theory is image slicing, especially as implemented in the advanced image slicer (AIS) design used in the IFU of the Gemini near-infrared spectrograph (GNIRS).
