Image modelling shows that swaths of Osaka – the commercial heart of a region whose GDP is almost as big as that of the Netherlands – would disappear beneath the water in a 3C world, threatening the local economy and almost a third of the wider region's 19 million residents.
To find out what internal organs were present and whether any were joined, two radiologists, Dr. Clare Tempany and Dr. Lennox Hoyte, performed magnetic resonance imaging, or M.R.I. examinations, and used software to assemble the images into a three-dimensional model showing the babies' organs.
Then they compared the composite with the product of a mathematical model, showing what the image should have looked like if all of the high-energy photons from the supermassive black holes had hit Fermi's detectors at the expected energy levels.

Image simulation of this model shows a good agreement between calculated and experimental images.
Conversely, the simulations of the backscattering Mueller matrix images of the bimodal population model showed that the mixture comprising small and medium (compared to wavelength) scatterers was in the Rayleigh regime of scattering already at small volume concentration of the small scatterers.
The solution from image charges is in very good agreement with the analytic model for distances r ≳ L/2, where both the image charge solution and the analytic model show strong deviations from the bulk r −1 behavior.
Under pressure: These images, from a Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) computational model, show the pressure contours of a front-facing blast at various time intervals.
