Importantly, the size of the object on the retina, the binocular disparity when focusing on the object, and the demand characteristics were identical for both the illusory ownership condition and the control condition.
In accordance with the general agreement as to the functional significance of the P1, it can be argued that the P1 effect reflects a greater or deeper processing of contour and form information in the illusory square condition.
