In this paper we demonstrate compact high-resolution optoacoustic microscopy system based on coaxial illumination-detection geometry and a saw-tooth scan motion, which allow real time 2D imaging.
Using the confocal illumination and detection scheme in particular offers very strong localization of signal to the surface vasculature, while the wide-area detection in the targeted scheme can provide more depth-weighted signals.
As a visual aide, Fig. 5 shows the origin of fluorescence detected in a small area on the surface when using the camera illumination and detection scheme, overlaid on top of the maximum intensity projection of the microvasculature stack.
Note that for simplicity, all the above equations use r s and r d as discrete points, but they can be extended to any illumination or detection strategies applied to complex boundaries by collecting the photons generated or detected inside the areas.
