A representative sample of 54,451 Dutch adults drawn from different areas (i.e. rural, urban and mixed), aged 18 or more years and living in a household were asked whether they had provided care for two weeks or longer during the last 12 months for a family member who was severely ill or needed assistance because of an illness, accident, hospital admission or other reasons.
In addition, the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners lists many veterinarian hospitals that offer free critical care for ill or injured assistance dogs and also runs a fund for people in financial need who face large vet bills.
The older ones, who in several cases were also ill, perceived social assistance as economic dependency and saw that finding a job or getting sickness benefit would be the solution.
The supreme court will deliver its verdict this morning on two related cases brought by men who are severely ill but require medical assistance in order to die.
Arguably, chronically ill persons on social assistance have the same kind of needs for rehabilitation as those chronically ill persons who qualify for sickness benefit [ 22, 23].
For example, in the USA, each year, almost a quarter of the population provides unpaid assistance to ill, disabled, or elderly persons [ 3].
Indeed, the empirical evidence available from jurisdictions in which a permissive regime exists (as described in Chapter Four) provides no basis for believing that individuals seek assistance for ill-considered or frivolous reasons.
In Kansas, for instance, where drug treatment has replaced incarceration for some offenders and mentally ill offenders have received housing assistance, the prison population fell in recent years, largely because recidivism also declined, said Roger Werholtz, secretary of the Kansas Corrections Department.
This wave of interviews, seven years after the first, focused on the 234 mothers, now 72 to 82, who had become ill or disabled and required assistance from their children within the past two years.
"Despite these complexities, New York City has developed a program unique in the country in its content and scope which we believe will provide significant assistance to mentally ill inmates with the hope that these inmates will be able to successfully reintegrate into the community," he said.
