Previously only the transcript encoding this protein had been identified in devil milk and wallaby mammary transcriptomes33, where it was referred to as Novel Gene 1. Homology to any protein could not be found through BLAST and HMMer searches.
CCL16 was not identified in devil or opossum, and this gene appears to be present only in the eutherian lineage.

None of the Tasmanian devil IL22 sequences were identified in the devil transcriptomes.
No other Class II gene families have been identified in the devil, indicating that either the devil only has one functional Class II gene family or the other genes are too divergent from known marsupial Class II genes to be detected by the probes.
In addition it has not been previously identified in the devil or platypus.

For example many single LRC Ig domains were identified in the devil on short scaffolds which likely form only part of full LRC genes [ 9].
The number is very similar to those identified in the devil genome (24), but less than that recognised in the opossum genome (45).
Fifteen of these genes could be identified in the devil genome, and one gene, NOD1, had a predicted rearrangement that was predicted to be present in both DFTD genomes but absent from the normal Tasmanian devil genomes (Table S4).
NCR3 appears to have a complex history, with an origin dating at least to the last common ancestor of mammals and reptiles, but the gene appears to have been lost in many lineages, with only a pseudogene present in mice, and the gene not being identified in opossum, devil, platypus or any bird genome.
