Using a BLAST search against the whole genome, we identified a genomic contig containing P. flava PRHOXNB gene but found that this contig was not located on PfBS11F10, suggesting that the P. flava ParaHox cluster is not flanked by PRHOXNB.
Analysis of written student responses to the assignments corroborated these data, indicating that the vast majority of students successfully identified a genomic island unique to a single genome or to a subset of the genomes (Table 5).
While most of these SNPs were discovered using the candidate gene approach [ 5], a more comprehensive, genome-wide linkage approach has identified a genomic region on chromosome 2 that is associated with the VO2max training response.
BLAST queries (www.ncbi.nihl.gov/blast) identified a genomic region syntenic to this B. oleracea genome segment at the extremity of the top arm of Arabidopsis thaliana L. chromosome 1 (Farinhó et al. 2007).
Finally, a recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Holsteins in ROI identified a genomic region on Bos taurus chromosome 22 containing the taurine transporter gene SLC6A6, which was suggestively associated with bTB resistance, although it only explained a small proportion of the total variance due to genetic factors (Finlay et al., 2012).
We identified a genomic record of a closely RmInt1-related intron buried in the genome of extant S. meliloti/ S. medicae species, and obtained evidence to suggest that the insertion of this intron probably occurred before the divergence of these rhizobial species.

The posttest data revealed that 92% or 84% of students surveyed gained confidence in using a Mauve multiple-genome alignment to identify a genomic island upon completion of one or both exercises, respectively (P < 0.0001; Table 2).
In most cases, at least 20 nt are required to uniquely identify a genomic location in the unmasked part of the human genome [ 28], and even more if mismatches, SNPs, or indels are allowed.
We used PCR and RACE to identify a genomic sequence spanning about 350 kb and encoding a protein of 2323 amino acids.
We began by first identifying a genomic signature that is associated with IL-6 over-expression.
