IDC is graded as follows: no calcifications = free (IDC 0), 1 – 2 calcifications = mild (IDC 1), 3 – 4 calcifications = moderate (IDC 2) and ≥ 5 calcifications = severe (IDC 3).
Of the 16 surgically treated or euthanized dogs, eight (50%) were graded as IDC 3, three (19%) as IDC 2 and five (31%) as IDC 1.
We tested the tissues from the following sources: 8 normal, 31 infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC), 1 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), 9 metastatic lymph nodes from breast cancer, and 5 other types of breast cancer cases (3 cases of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), one medullary carcinoma and one signet ring cell carcinoma).
The patients were diagnosed either with DCIS only (n=29), IDC only (n=26) or synchronous DCIS and IDC (n=23).

EAM was induced using the classic methods of cardiac myosin immunization on day 0 and day 7. 2 × 106/per rat mature DC (mDC), immature DC (iDC), pcDNA3 transfected iDC, pcDNA3-IL-10 transfected iDC or PBS were injected intravenously for treatment 5 days after the first immunization.

The concept that LN does not constitute a true pre-neoplastic lesion, but rather represents a risk factor, was supported by evidence showing that LN increases the risk of cancer in both breasts, the most common histological type of which is invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) [1, 3].
