Figure 1 presents the hypothetical proportion of adverse outcome that could be avoided if we assume that all women in this population planned their pregnancies, or no women smoked around the time of pregnancy, or both.
The settings used were: a two-sided test with a power of (1 − β) = 0.95 at a significance level of α = 0.05/14, the ratio of controls to cases = 1, the hypothetical proportion of controls with exposure = 5 and the least extreme odds ratio (OR) to be detected = 1.5.
