In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the National Endowment for the Humanities identified Rita Charon's narrative medicine grant as one that enriched and shaped American lives.

Insofar as this is an account that draws from paradigmatic cases of humanity to identify our identity conditions, it can allow that, while there are non-paradigmatic cases of humans that may not be a target of all our practical concerns, they are nevertheless individuals like us and so are certainly appropriate targets of some such concerns (like being named, dressed, and sung to).

It can be traced to a tiny group of well-connected individuals and an understanding that, even in a world fed on a diet of 24-hour news and wearied by broken political promises, humanity could still identify with the suffering of a continent.
So there can be a significant element of arbitrariness about the segments of humanity that we identify as "groups".
