"One of the biggest problems in humanitarian design is that lots of designers are doing similar work, but it's really hard for them to share their knowledge," said Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of Architecture for Humanity, a Sausalito, California-based humanitarian design group.

Bruce Nussbaum, an influential American design commentator, recently posted a blog entitled: "Is humanitarian design the new imperialism?" in which he accused some humanitarian designers of imposing well-meant, but inappropriate solutions on developing countries.

Because of Bertie County's poverty, "very few of these kids will become designers," said Emily Pilloton, founder of the humanitarian design group, Project H, who recently moved to Bertie County from San Francisco to run Studio H with Project H's project architect, Matthew Miller.

Adopting a similar structure to Architecture for Humanity, Ms. Pilloton encouraged empathetic designers to form local "chapters," which identify humanitarian design problems, then work with other chapters to develop solutions that, ideally, can be adapted for use elsewhere.

Yet Mr. Nussbaum ignited a spirited debate by pointing out that not all humanitarian design projects observe those principles, and identifying some of the pitfalls for designers of entering the political minefield of economic development.
