We don't know how much metadata the N.S.A. collects.
One need only consider the many other internet services all Australians use, and the many telecommunications providers who facilitate those individuals' access to internet services, in order to get a sense of how much metadata exists, and what exactly it might reveal about them.
The NSA isn't disclosing in its transparency report how much metadata it is actually collecting.
Metadata sounds kind of boring, but considering how much metadata can be packed into a color-corrected, cropped, commented RAW image file with EXIF, you might want some way of keeping track of all that across systems.
While the CDEs can be used to tag individual files it is not clear yet how much metadata is necessary to enable automatic data extraction (e.g. extract properties for a single frame from a time series) and processing, and if such metadata can be extracted directly from the files without user input.
