Little known to outsiders, the Jersey Italian hot dog is a small-circumference sausage served on hollowed-out "pizza-bread," a round loaf of the kind often found in Sicily.
On that journey it's been transformed into gooey deep-pan; had every topping imaginable thrown atop its hallowed mozzarella and, among other Pizza Hut-induced indignities, had its crusts stuffed with cheese and – earlier this month – its circumference spanned with hot-dog meat.
The group looked for pairs of equally wide circles, centered in opposite sides of the sky, having identical patterns of hot and cold spots along their circumferences.
Hot glue the ends together, reducing the total circumference by no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm).
The crater, about 4 miles (6 km) in circumference, was known to the Greeks and Romans for its hot springs and the six-story Thermae Anianae ("Thermal Baths") built for visitors.
