For the 1957- and 1968-like moderate pandemic scenarios, we estimated age- specific case fatality rates for hospitalized influenza cases by combining hospitalization (Figure S4) and mortality data from the city of Guadalajara, Mexico during the period 2000 2005 (Ministry of Health, State of Jalisco, Mexico, Figure S5).
An acute subcortical infarction was found in the right basal ganglia and periventricular areas on the 2nd day of hospitalization (Figure 1A, 1B).
Of the 158 (unique) viruses that were sequenced for which infection status was known, 26.5% (42/158) required hospitalization (Figure S1).
Scatter plots of the residuals shows moderate correlation between the two syndromes and hospitalizations (Figure 3).

In addition, the California Patient Discharge Data Set did not collect data from federal hospitals in California, a fact that would lead to an underestimation of hospitalization and hospital charge figures.
To assess this possibility, we extracted all records that included other infectious gastroenteritis without CDAD (all other gastrointestinal [GI] infections, ICD 001 009 without 008.45) and compared the trend with CDAD hospitalizations (Appendix Figure, panel B).
Available data include monthly enrollment figures, hospitalization and outpatient medical claims, outpatient prescription drug claims, and eligibility information.
