In Late Shang divination as practiced during the reign of Wuding (c. 1250 1192 bce), cattle scapulae or turtle plastrons, in a refinement of Neolithic practice, were first planed and bored with hollow depressions to which an intense heat source was then applied.
We studied the aquatic geochemistry of CO2, CH4, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), P, Si, and colloidal trace metal from hollows, depressions, permafrost subsidences and soil waters in the actively thawing discontinuous permafrost zone of Western Siberia Lowland WSLL).
Some fishes prepare nests by hollowing out depressions in the sand bottom (cichlids, for example), build nests with plant materials and sticky threads excreted by the kidneys (sticklebacks), or blow a cluster of mucus-covered bubbles at the water surface (gouramis).
The CO2, DOC, major and trace metal concentrations decreased with the increase of the surface area of the water body, along the hydrological continuum (soil water → hollows → depressions and permafrost subsidences → thaw ponds → thermokarst lakes).
It must be borne in mind that CO2 is colourless and has no smell, and its presence is not easily detected.Because it is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate in hollows and depressions in volcanic areas (Allard et al. 1989; Stupfel and Le Guern 1989; Baxter et al. 1989, 1990, 1999; Baxter 2010).
The geomorphons algorithm was used to generate 10 original landforms: "flat", "footslope", "summit", "ridge", "shoulder", "spur", "slope", "hollow", "valley", and "depression" that were aggregated to new landforms coinciding with slope positions: "toeslope", "footslope", "backslope", "shoulder", "summit", and "depression" recognized by soil surveyors.
It occupies a depression hollowed out by the Seine, and the surrounding heights have been respected as the limits of the city.
"Unstable material is exposed to the temperatures and space environment, and slowly over thousands, maybe millions, of years, it's lost to Mercury's atmosphere and to space, to create a depression or hollow in an area where there are often many such hollows that etch the terrain," Solomon said.
Shallow linear depressions, called hollow ways, were left by the repeated traffic of people and animals over centuries.
