Mr. Holl took on something vaguely similar a few years ago for the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, inserting an addition to its architecture school into a tricky, dissonant space connecting two 19th-century buildings.
The series will continue with Diana Balmori of Balmori Associates on Nov. 9; Thom Mayne of Morphosis, an architectural firm, on Nov. 30; and Steven Holl of Steven Holl Associates on Dec. 7.

This allowed Mr. Holl to create various entrance points into the building.
"The idea was to fuse the addition with the landscape, rather than try to add an object on," Mr. Holl said.
After discarding 20 models, Holl at the last minute created a watercolor based on a musical score, depicting a planar house that appears to float on water.
Holl's buildings lead you on a voyage of discovery, as one space flows into the next and a surprise lurks around every corner.
Mr. Holl is also at work on a new addition to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and an extension to the architecture school at the University of Minnesota -- "during winter, strips of snow will enliven the facades with sparkling white horizontal lines".
Only Mr. Holl proposed setting his addition on the side, creating a series of glass blocks that continues from a new public plaza on the north end to frame one edge of a long, rolling sculpture park at the south.
The angular Holl building would be set partly on stilts and accented by terraces and stepped ramps that echo urban fire escapes.
