One hundred and thirty-seven years after Union troops bested Gen. Robert E. Lee and his Confederate legions in their desperate gamble known as Pickett's charge, the National Park Service today demolished an observation tower that has been a magnet for criticism from historians, park officials and battlefield preservationists.
"There's a whole lot of nostalgia around here," David Slay, a historian and park ranger, describing how men occasionally march over to his desk and gripe when they read a placard about the war's root causes.
Grace Jeffers, a design historian, calls parked Airstreams "occasional architecture".
"The more difficult question," said Alyson Beha, the group's director of research, planning and policy, "is what about all these other parks that don't have the private money and are not located in wealthy neighborhoods?" Park historians say the resplendent state of Central Park speaks to the conservancy's success, as well as to the extraordinary wealth surrounding the park.
In September, Renova helped sponsor a $50,000 conference to bring together supporters of state parks, historians and Russian émigrés to discuss the Russian influences on California's history.
Instead, as Stacy Allen, the park historian at the Shiloh battlefield, has observed, each generation continues to see the civil war differently.

Bletchley Park historian Dr Joel Greenberg said the huts were built in 1939 at the start of WW2.
