In exile after Waterloo, Marbot returned to France in 1819 and worked on his Remarques critiques (1820), a reply to Gen. Joseph Rogniat's treatise on war, in which Marbot effectively contrasted the human factor in war with Rogniat's pure theory.
In his Remarques sur la langue françoise, utiles à ceux qui veulent bien parler et bien escrire (1647; "Remarks on the French Language, Useful for Those Who Wish to Speak Well and Write Well"), Vaugelas recorded what he considered good usage: the speech of the "soundest" elements of the court and the written language of the most intelligent authors.
Among his early works were Remarques sur l'évolution phonologique du russe comparée à celles des autres langues slaves (1929; "Comments on Phonological Change in Russian Compared with That in Other Slavic Languages") and Kharakteristichke yevrazi-yskogo yazykovogo soyuza (1931; "Characteristics of the Eurasian Language Affinity").
The story is told by Aristotle and cited by Plutarch (Moralia, II, Consolation to Apollonius, 27). 2. In his brief essay, "Remarque sur la Révolte" (Camus 1965, 1682 97), published in 1945, Camus mentioned Being and Nothingness twice while first laying out his idea of revolt.
His contemporaries soon accepted his decisions as authoritative in cases of doubtful or conflicting usage; parler Vaugelas meant to speak not merely correctly but elegantly, and the Remarques became la bible de l'usage.
A similar desire for systematic analysis inspired Claude Favre, sieur de Vaugelas, also an Academician, whose Remarques sur la langue françoise (1647) records polite usage of the time.

Thus La Forge's first publication was the lengthy set of notes that explain various features of Descartes' Traité, which appeared as Remarques on pp. 171 408 of the first French edition of that work.
