Nova Scotia is a small, eastern province (population 950,000) with the highest proportion of residents aged 65 years and older in Canada [ 18] and with one of the highest population rates of cancer and diabetes [ 19, 20].
The reasons for this very high population rate are unclear, and it cannot be explained by high population density alone since this also would apply to other NEDI sites, such as Beijing [8].
Low income is associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes and a higher population rate of referral to this regional DEC.
By contrast, in IF RES networks and for small values of the input, the inhibitory population exhibited a higher population rate peak per oscillation cycle than the excitatory population, while for strong input this relation reversed.
These findings from Canada are of international importance, because they provide insights for countries with both lower and higher population rates of cardiac catheterization.
It also highlighted the absence of high-quality studies on the topic from low- and middle-income countries, which generally have higher population rates of disability, higher levels of violence and fewer support services for those living with a disability.
Developed countries with relatively low rates of cardiac catheterization, such as the United Kingdom, may be under-using the procedure, or alternatively, countries with high population rates, such as the United States, may be overusing the procedure [ 2, 6].
If regional cardiac programs were to adopt a strategy of increasing cardiac catheterization rates, our study does not provide information about how higher population rates of cardiac catheterization ought to be achieved.
The observed state-wide thrombolysis rate of 14% is among the highest population based rate of thrombolysis published so far.
