Nasa's dataset, one of three main global surface temperature records, shows February recorded the highest anomaly against long term average temperatures.
The highest anomaly index was 67598.5 ± 27670.5 (for the sulfur count) followed by 6451.1 ± 2077.1 for the hydrogen count.
The black arrows show areas of very high anomalies which might be due to the presence of gas.
Except for these locally high anomalies, the spatial variation of the Bouguer anomalies is poor in and around the Niitsu Hills, although the Niitsu Hills show a distinct topographic high.
The eastern boundary of rifting at 94°W can be traced across the continental shelf north of the Abbot Ice Shelf as a gradient in the free-air gravity anomalies from higher anomalies in the east to lower in the west.
For example, in 1998, the most geographically extensive and severe coral bleaching ever recorded was associated with the high anomalies in sea surface temperatures associated with an ENSO event (Hoegh-Guldberg 1999; Wilkinson and others 1999; Mydlarz and others 2006).
The concentration of sulfate shows a high anomaly in Tabriz city which is affected by contamination from municipal and industrial wastewater.
The high anomaly becomes more marked if it is compared with about 50 mW/m2 at IODP Sites C0004 and C008 (Harris et al. 2011) (Figure 2).
It is worthnoting that epicenters of the 2004 Sumatra and 2005 Nias earthquakes were located on the eastern border of the trench-parallel high anomaly zone at the boundary between the positive and negative gravity anomalies (Figure 2b).
