Recently, it was proposed to be a mechanism by which higher-order diversity is generated, thereby leading to a diverse population of RNAs [ 34, 35].
As higher order zeta diversity is only a subset of lower order ones, this declining trend constrains the variation of zeta diversity at higher orders and in turn makes extrapolation of higher order zeta diversity less problematic.
With the cooperation of the DL, a higher order of diversity can be achieved.
However, after normalising higher-order zeta diversity by local alpha diversity (i.e. the proportion of locally common species; Fig. 4h), the above assertion seems disappeared: areas with many locally common species (Fig. 4c) do not overlap well with areas having a higher proportion of locally common species (Fig. 4h).

However, looking closely, we can see that areas with greater higher-order zeta diversity, representing locally common species in the calculation (when using the moving window technique; e.g. see lighter areas in Figs. 4c and d), seemingly coincides with areas of high alpha diversity (local species richness; lighter areas in Fig. 4a).
Higher order association measures are often independent of lower order ones, hence an overall segregation or diversity index should be the arithmetic mean of the normalized association measures at all orders.
This diversity between highly homologous receptors that potentially interact with common ligands may result from higher order receptor complexes, interactions with membrane proteins or unique intracellular signaling intermediates.
