The prevalence of chronic disease did not vary greatly by age (36% for less than 35 years versus 41% for more than 35 years) (χ 2 = 2.72, P > 0.05); but it differed considerably by educational level (χ 2 = 18.68, P < 0.001), 27%, 37% and 45%, respectively for middle school or higher, elementary school, and no formal schooling.
