Forest stands with a combination of a high SDI and a lower dq showed the highest tree size heterogeneity (Fig. 6c).
The effect of location on a north-south gradient had a lower effect on tree size heterogeneity, showing the highest tree size heterogeneity between 35° N and 40° N (Fig. 7b).
The lower number of tree species and temperatures in the German plots can lead to a lower structure while highly productive even-aged monoculture-type forest stands are still present with combined high productivity and low tree size heterogeneity.
However, the Mexican genetic background contributes to avocado diversity with a plethora of desirable, selected characteristics in commercial varieties, such as cold tolerance, smaller tree size, high oil content, early maturity, and smooth fruit skin.
These post-cutting structures were conifer-dominated stands, which can sequestrate carbon for long time, and reach a high growing stock volume and large average tree size, resulting in high carbon stock of both living biomass and dead organic matter.
In general, the higher was the mean tree size the lower was the pre- and post-cutting stand basal area.
If a high variability of tree sizes reflects on the presence of large trees, one could expect high variability to be associated with higher growth rates (as found in this study), i.e. a positive association between high variability and tree-size driven productivity.
Thus, although the results demonstrate that soil application of uniconazole can be used to control olive tree size in high-density orchards, it should be used carefully to ensure adequate tree illumination, so as to avoid crop loss.
The higher mortality rates held regardless of tree size or type or elevation at which it grew.
