Professors at a University of Calgary high technology center have licensed 300 technologies in the last decade.
The partnership intends to turn it into a multitenant high technology center.
"A high technology center should be a good drawing card because no one has a created this type of center before," said Richard Karson, a senior managing director of Insignia/ESG, a national commercial brokerage with offices in Syosset.
That sentiment resonates in high-technology centers across the country.
Publications in the West Coast high-technology centers like Seattle, San Francisco and San Jose are particularly vulnerable, as are those covering financial news, technology, sports, health and beauty.
But in the fourth quarter of 1999, analysts said, The Mercury and The Globe, both based in high-technology centers, saw steady rises in their help-wanted advertising revenues.
But while many regions, particularly the industrial belt around the Great Lakes, the Southwest and the high-technology centers of the West Coast, are still languishing, rays of light from several areas -- like Baltimore, and in different ways, Denver and Las Vegas -- are breaking through the clouds hanging over the economy.
The growth of U.S. high-technology centers has been driven by the ready availability of scientific and engineering professionals.
"There is no question we have seen a proliferation of high-technology centers," says AnnaLee Saxenian, a UC Berkeley professor who has written a comparative study of Silicon Valley and Boston.
Despite such challenges, Mr. Ginsberg says he can turn TechCity -- and Kingston -- into a thriving secondary high-technology center.
The Chamber of Commerce predicted that the "multiplier" effect of M.C.C. could turn Austin into the country's foremost high-technology center.
