Fish kept at constant, high rations grew considerably faster than low-food fish.
We furthermore found that late, but not early, juvenile food availability influenced adult digestive efficiency (GLM: early food availability: F1,71 = 0·03, P = 0·87; late food availability: F1,71 = 5·0, P = 0·028; N = 28 (high rations), 22 (low rations), 15 (low-high rations), 10 (high-low rations); Fig. 4).
The groups switched from low to high rations early and late in the juvenile period took similarly long to catch up in size with the NHH fish and showed similarly strong growth acceleration to food increase (cf. Fig. 3).
A higher ration of roughage increased chewing (12 wk), decreased oral manipulation of the trough (12 and 22 wk) and the pen (22 wk), and increased rumen weight.
The positive effect on DM intake was reflected in the energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield, as a higher ration digestibility increased the ECM yield by 1.7 kg/d and a higher CP concentration increased it by 1.2 kg/d.
