Martin Stephen, the High Master of St Paul's, says his school was founded to educate able children in Greater London.
In an indignant outburst, the high master of the independent St Paul's boys' school called league tables "a cancer on the face of education".
The thriving literary society they founded became the victim of its own success when the school's high master decided enough was enough: "Sacks, you're dissolved … you don't exist, you don't exist any more".
Stepping down after 24 years as a headteacher, most recently as High Master of St Paul's, I was asked to predict what would happen in the next 24 years in education.
"I'd been high master at Manchester Grammar, and a lot of the schools up there used to run a joint campaign for the Assisted Places Scheme," he said of a boys' school in England's northwest.
The program is the brainchild of Martin Stephen, a former "high master" at St . Pauls, where fees are nearly £20,000, or $32,000, a year for day pupils and £29,000 a year for boarders.
His success for St Paul's continued in 1910, but his school career came to an abrupt end following an argument between his father and the High Master of the school.
