When describing children, Pearson cannot compete with Helen Simpson's Hey, Yeah, Right, Get a Life.
This third collection, published in London as "Hey Yeah Right Get a Life" -- a title I kind of miss -- finally ought to establish her reputation on these shores.
Simpson's book, a series of comic shrieks on the subject of modern motherhood, was published originally as "Hey Yeah Right Get a Life" -- a title you would think needed no improvement.
'Or two.'" Simpson brought out her first book, Four Bare Legs in a Bed, in 1990, followed it up with a second, Dear George, five years later, and a third, Hey Yeah Right Get a Life, five years after that.
Although unintentionally, each successive collection broadly follows the progression of a woman's life: lusty newlyweds in Four Bare Legs in A Bed (1990); a broody girlfriend in Dear George (1995); and the labour pains of exhausted mums in Hey Yeah Right Get a Life (2000).
Four Bare Legs' amorous newlyweds morph into the stupefied mothers of Hey Yeah Right Get a Life, Constitutional's (2005) divorcees and outpatients, and, finally, into Cockfosters' "sandwich generation"; women who, while "caught between teens and aged parents", are nevertheless liberated from the daily burden of childcare and are feeling out the edges of their newfound freedom.

The album's free-wheeling filler track, Hey Wow Yeah Yeah, is much more fun, even though its rush of vim mystifyingly fails to coalesce into a song.
