What's more, the machines' heuristic scheduling software lacked full understanding of the interactions among stations, so it treated each of the processes as separate tasks, all of which had to be completed before the next sheet could enter the work path.
Before large-scale infrastructure technologies can be endowed with model-based reasoning abilities, however, researchers must overcome another barrier: the skepticism of old-school engineers who are accustomed to keeping their machines on the short leash provided by heuristic control software.
