Here we aimed to test empirically two selection mechanisms: negative frequency-dependent selection and environmental heterogeneity (density-dependent selection), which are predicted to maintain genetic variation in natural populations [12] 18.
Three experiments were executed to investigate (1) the effects of L. conchilega presence on sedimentary processes, as well as (2) the impacts of sedimentation on L. conchilega survival and patch growth, and (3) assess small-scale spatial heterogeneity in density and ecosystem engineering in L. conchilega aggregations.
To simulate heterogeneity sections, density structure models are needed.
Within the particle size distribution of a solute, the heterogeneity in density can be observed.
For example, we derive simple relationships between the clustering coefficient, the heterogeneity, the density, the centralization, and the topological overlap.
Lastly, for approximately factorizable networks, theory shows that the mean clustering coefficient (which is an index for modularity) is determined by the heterogeneity and density of the network.
Due to the intrinsic polydispersity present during synthesis, dispersions of such materials exhibit simultaneous heterogeneity in density ρ, molar mass M, and particle diameter d.
The majority of biofilms exhibit heterogeneity in density, with cell aggregates distributed along the exopolysaccharide matrix, originating openings and channels where nutrients circulate and exchange of metabolites occurs [ 44].

The unperturbed ocean surface must be an equipotential surface of the gravitational field, and because the latter reflects variations due to heterogeneities of density within Earth, so also do the equipotentials.
