Measure your desired hem width from the bottom of the fabric.
If your total hem width needs to be 1 inch (2.5 cm), then this fold should be 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) wide.
Your hem should have a "fold" inside of it; i.e., it should look something like you folded the bottom of the fabric up an inch or so, then folded that another inch (or whatever hem width you're using).
