If generosity, honesty and helpfulness do not arise spontaneously, one approach would be to design transactions so that helping others remains the best rational option.

The predictive ability of rating of neurologist's helpfulness was not surprising since our qualitative findings suggested that neurologists were a target of frustration for patients who wished to have the procedure in Canada and could not.
In a study by Toseland et al. [ 14], it was demonstrated that this assessment of helpfulness is not a significant predictor for utilisation in the range of professional health and human services.
In fact, they write, "reputation effects decayed thereafter and actually turned negative for past reputation". This wasn't something the researchers were expecting, but they posit that a "good citizen" is often seen as someone who helps others on a regular basis, and that an old reputation for helpfulness doesn't do anyone any good.

If this tripling of helpfulness doesn't seem remarkable enough, consider that the subjects were 18 months old — hardly able to reason or review or reflect.
