After being presented with the vignette, respondents were questioned about what was wrong with the person, how they could be helped, the likely helpfulness of a range of interventions, the likelihood of recovery, knowledge of causes and risk factors, beliefs associated with stigma and discrimination, contact with people like those in the vignette, and the health of the respondent.
Participants were also presented with scales assessing their perceptions about the helpfulness of a range of help-seeking options to help "Z" to deal with this problem (rated as 'very helpful', 'fairly helpful', 'neither helpful nor unhelpful', 'fairly unhelpful', 'very unhelpful', 'don't know').
Table 3 also shows the percentages of participants who rated the helpfulness of a treatment used as a 3 or 4 (extremely helpful).
