Last week, Portland became the first city in the nation to resist the Justice Department request for help with interviews when Acting Chief Andrew Kirkland, on the advice of Deputy City Attorney David Lesh, said interviewing immigrants would violate a 1981 state privacy law that prevents law enforcement from maintaining profiles of individuals not connected to criminal investigations.
Acting Chief Kirkland said the United States attorney's office in Portland asked the police last Thursday to help with interviews of young Middle Eastern men in the city, sending along a list of 200 names.
