Ashley Highfield, the former BBC and Microsoft senior executive, has been appointed the new chief executive of newspaper publisher Johnston Press – and been given a £500,000 "golden hello" share package.
"Goodnight Ladies" and "Hello, Hello" share a vaudevillian vibe and an outdated sensibility that were apt bookends for this finale.

Highfield was also awarded a "golden hello" of 10.5m shares, which are worth £575,916 at Johnston Press's current share price of 5.5p.
The £10.1m golden hello award, in shares, comes on top of Corcoran's salary of £528,000 and an annual bonus of £953,000.
When in 2012 Cook recruited former Dixons boss John Browett to run his retail arm, the British executive was handed a golden hello of 100,000 Apple shares, worth $57m at the time.
His 2013 remuneration was boosted by a "golden hello" of restricted share awards and payments to cover his relocation from Ireland.
