Modern tree height gradients are indicative of nitrogen versus phosphorus limitation and height of the water table.
The initial pore water pressure is taken into account through the relative height of the water, hw rel, which is the ratio of the height of the water table to the soil thickness, and the relative pressure of the water pw rel, that is to say the ratio of pore-water pressure to liquefaction pressure.
The rainfall patterns, the crops to be grown, and the normal height of the water table also are considered.
