A headland marked by a temple ruin greets you as your ferry arrives.
If you're feeling energetic, walk the coastal footpath down to Readymoney cove, then along the cliffs to Polridmouth bay, and out to the Gribbin, a headland topped by an angular tower, a warning landmark for sailors erected in 1832.
The barren arc-shaped island consists of three deeply indented headlands joined by two narrow isthmuses; its maximum elevation, that of Mount Áyios Ilías (883 feet [269 metres]), is near the centre.
Our next stop, 36-acre Lime Kiln Point State Park, a craggy headland, was billed by guidebooks as the place to spy orcas.
It went with a sudden flare and blew its wick in Gloucester, sank in Salem, and bleached the salt grass bending off Cape Ann, flipped seals into the sound, rattled the shades of a dark house on that headland abandoned except by Hopper.
The Noirmont headland was bought by the States in 1950 but the granite memorial to the island's WWII victims was not built until 1970.
The headland is topped by an Ordnance Survey "Trig Point".
The nearest human settlement is the village of Zennor, and the headland is flanked by two coves, Pendour and Porthzennor.
